Leadership today relies on astute decision making. Life moves so fast there’s little room left for mistakes.
How much time have you spent really, I mean really, looking at how you make decisions?
Here’s a clue to why so many people, smart people, make bad decisions: outdated thinking and ingrained behavior patterns are often invisible and get in the way of optimal choices.
The cure to “OMG, I did it again!!!†is understanding your patterns, those behaviors, and responses you repeat and repeat. The knee-jerk ways you get your buttons pushed and then beat yourself up because you respond without resolve.
When you gain a new level of awareness about why and how you make decisions you unlock and release untapped potential.
It starts with the 3 C’s:
Character: Delve into your underlying character, the core part of you that is strong, courageous, capable and compassionate. You don’t have to be a jerk when someone makes you feel small and stupid, you can rise to the occasion with a carefully planned response. All you need to do is take a deep breath and wait a few seconds before you respond. Character building underlies bodybuilding. It is who you really are. Take the time to ask the right questions to become strong of character.
Confidence: Build your character to gain confidence. This is pure energy. It has to do with the way you stand, sit, and speak. Confidence is an inside job. Sure, you can puff yourself up and think that fake charisma will land you applause and appreciation. It will. Only for a short time. Over the long haul, you need to be clear and concise. Often those who are the heroes are individuals who show their courage with few words and a willingness to stay steady in the midst of conflict and confusions. Where do you see yourself?
Communication: To get new results you need new thinking to express yourself. The people part of business is still the most vital aspect of success. Communicate based on interpersonal relating rather than individual preferences to minimize unnecessary conflict and complexity. Create a new model of collaboration based on systems theory (basic understanding about how all parts of a business connect to the others).
With deepened skills in the 3 C’s you are guaranteed a new level of awareness about why and how you make decisions. It’s necessary to discard patterned conditioning from an earlier era so you can ask different questions for a different time.
