Summary: The hero’s journey, a narrative framework popularized by Joseph Campbell, is more than just a storytelling tool. It is a blueprint for personal transformation and freedom. By viewing our lives through the lens of the hero’s journey, we can find purpose, overcome obstacles, and achieve a profound sense of freedom.
Dear Dr. Sylvia,
I am always intrigued by the concept of freedom.
I often wonder if anyone is really “free. “Like trust and love, freedom is a complex concept.
For example, as a child, my mother used to play a record called “Free to Be You and Me.” It had a profound impact on my development. I learned to say NO when it felt wrong in my life.
On the other hand, I could say yes to lots of adventures that were frowned upon for little girls.
Thus, I became a strong woman. At work, many people come to me who are still ambivalent about how to speak up and be heard.
I would love to hear your thoughts about how understanding how the hero/heroine’s journey can help us attain the next level of freedom in life.
Signed,
Free to Be Me
Dear Free to Be Me,
Lucky your mom provided you with “out of the box” thinking. Did you know it is the 50th anniversary for that famous children’s entertainment project by actress and author Marlo Thomas as a guide for you.
It was more than boys could have Barbies and women could own a business.
It was a clear statement that it is your responsibility to find out who you are and not be kept in that box where you would “should” on yourself
The stories and songs celebrated tolerance, individuality, and gender acceptance.
We are all on the hero’s journey of self-understanding and self-acceptance. So, let’s explore what this is all about.
The Call to Adventure: Stepping Out of Comfort Zones
Every hero’s journey begins with the call to adventure. It is an invitation to step out of the familiar and into the unknown.
This call often manifests in our lives as a sense of restlessness or a desire for change. Embracing this call requires courage, but it also brings a sense of freedom as we break free from the constraints of our comfort zones.
- Recognizing the Call: Pay attention to moments of dissatisfaction or longing. These often indicate that it’s time to embark on a new adventure.
- Taking the First Step: It is crucial to overcome the initial fear of change. Start small by setting achievable goals that push your boundaries.
Crossing the Threshold: Embracing Transformation
To demonstrate, perhaps you are dissatisfied with your present job, and yet you are paid well, and the work is easy. You yearn for more.
Therefore, safety makes way for “what if.”
It may mean moving to a new city or perhaps taking a senior position you are not sure you are ready to handle.
Thus, once the call is answered, the hero crosses the threshold into a new world filled with challenges and opportunities. This phase symbolizes the transformative power of stepping into the unknown.
Embracing this transformation is where true freedom lies.
- Facing Challenges: Life will present trials and obstacles. Instead of avoiding them, view these challenges as opportunities for growth.
- Seeking Guidance: Mentors and allies are crucial in the hero’s journey. Surround yourself with supportive individuals who can offer wisdom and encouragement.
Trials and Tribulations: Building Resilience
The hero’s journey is fraught with trials that test resolve and resilience. Though daunting, these challenges are essential for personal development and the attainment of freedom.
Ultimately, you may feel courageous enough to speak out to a micromanager or a “power monger” at work.
- Embracing Failure: Understand that failure is a natural part of the journey. Each setback is a learning experience that brings you closer to your goals.
- Cultivating Resilience: Develop a mindset of perseverance. Bouncing back from adversity is a critical component of personal freedom.
The Ultimate Boon: Discovering Your True Self
After enduring numerous trials, the hero achieves the ultimate boon—an invaluable reward that brings newfound knowledge and insight. In life, this represents the discovery of your true self and purpose.
- Self-Discovery: Take time for introspection. Understand your values, passions, and strengths. This self-awareness is liberating and empowers you to live authentically.
- Living Purposefully: Align your actions with your newfound understanding of yourself. Purpose-driven living brings a profound sense of freedom and fulfillment.
Returning Home: Integrating the Journey
Hence, the final phase of the hero’s journey is the return home, where the hero integrates their experiences and shares their newfound wisdom with others. This integration is crucial for maintaining the freedom gained through the journey.
- Sharing Your Story: Inspire others by sharing your experiences and insights. Your journey can serve as a guide for those facing similar challenges.
- Continuous Growth: The journey doesn’t end upon returning home. Embrace lifelong learning and remain open to new adventures and transformations.
A Life of More Freedom Awaits
In conclusion, adopting the hero’s journey as a model for living can unlock a profound sense of freedom. This framework encourages you to embrace change, overcome challenges, and discover your true self.
As you embark on your personal hero’s journey, remember that each step brings you closer to a life of purpose, fulfillment, and ultimate freedom.
In addition, embrace the call to adventure today. Step out of your comfort zone, face your trials with courage, and discover the boundless freedom that awaits your hero’s journey.
To your success,
Sylvia Lafair
