Before New Year’s Resolutions: The Leadership Reset That Prevents Burnout and Builds Engagement

Summary: Christmas is behind us. New Year’s hoopla is beginning. And this “in-between time?” It’s not empty. This is a short, but effective, time to recalibrate and think. It’s quiet enough to hear yourself. (Which is both beautiful… and mildly annoying. 😉) Here’s what I know after decades of coaching leaders: When the noise drops, your real intelligence shows up.

Dear Dr. Sylvia,

Usually, I make amazing New Year’s resolutions that last for at least a few months. That is no longer enough; now I want more than that for the coming year.

I want to be a pattern-breaker and make changes that will last all year and beyond. I want to get past burnout and activate a new level of engagement within my company.

Help please.

Signed,

Ready

GLIMMERS Live in Head, Heart, and Gut to Help You Lead

Dear Ready,

This is the perfect time to pause, breathe, and listen to your whole person leadership operating system.

That’s where GLIMMERS support you. Small signals that tell the truth before your mind starts negotiating.

And when a leader gets aligned, something surprising happens:
Burnout decreases, and engagement rises, not because you “motivated” people, but because you became clearer, steadier, and more trustworthy to follow.

To your alignment,

Dr. Sylvia

Big Changes Start in Your Inner World and Then Move to Relationships

Try this 7-minute reset (do it with coffee, not perfection):

HEAD (clarity): What’s true about this past year (facts, not fiction)?

What worked, and why?

HEART (honoring): What needs acknowledgment, gratitude, grief, pride, relief?

What didn’t, and what did it cost?

Who helped you more than you said out loud?

What moment proved you’re stronger than you think?

GUT (truth): What’s the quiet YES… and the quiet NO?

What am I tolerating that my body has already voted against?

What do I keep “thinking about” that I need to decide?

Here’s the question that changes everything: What pattern did I run when I was stressed?

Because if you don’t complete a pattern, you don’t “move on.”
You repeat it at work and at home, usually with better lighting and higher stakes.

So before the New Year pressure machine cranks up, choose ONE move that protects your energy and improves how you lead:

One boundary that supports nervous system regulation (translation: you stop running on fumes)

One conversation you’ve postponed (and yes, you know which one)

One habit that restores you: sleep, walking, breathing, eating like an adult

This is how engagement is built: not by hype, but by leaders who are present, consistent, and clear.

You don’t need a new personality in January.
You need alignment now.

What’s one thing you’re leaving behind in 2025, so you don’t drag it into 2026?

To your success,

Sylvia Lafair
