Summary: Let’s start with a truth most leaders don’t want to hear. People don’t leave companies; they leave patterns. And more specifically, they leave leaders whose patterns create disconnection, confusion, and emotional exhaustion. But the reverse is also true. When people love working with a leader, it’s not random. It’s not charisma alone, or just competence. It’s something deeper. Here you will find the answers.
Dear All,
After decades of working with leaders across various industries, I’ve found six consistent reasons people stay, engage, and thrive under certain leaders. Leaders whose patterns result in staff resignations are often found on sites like Glassdoor, Reddit, and Rate the Supervisor. Here are the 6 reasons people love working with certain leaders. See where you fit into the list.
1. Employees Feel Seen, Not Managed
The leaders people love don’t just track performance, they recognize humanity.
They notice when something is off.
Most importantly, they acknowledge effort, not just outcomes.
And finally, they treat people like whole beings, not job descriptions.
This is Head, Heart and Gut alignment in action.
“When people feel invisible, they disengage. When they feel seen, they come alive.”
Most leaders think visibility comes from performance reviews. It doesn’t. It comes from presence.
2. Leaders Create Psychological Safety Without Lowering Standards
This is where many leaders get it wrong. They believe they must choose between being liked and being respected. The best leaders do both.
They create environments where people can speak up without fear, admit mistakes without shame, challenge ideas without punishment, and still be held to high expectations.
This is not softness. This is strength with awareness. You can be kind without over-giving.
It’s what happens when leaders move from reactive patterns (like persecutor or avoider) into intentional leadership.
3. Positive Leaders Are Consistent, Especially Under Pressure
Anyone can be a good leader when things are going well.
The real test?
Stress. Deadlines. Conflict. Missed targets.
This is where unconscious patterns show up. For example, the bully/persecutor snaps. The rescuer over-functions. And of course, the avoider disappears. Therefore, trust erodes instantly.
4. The Best Leaders Have Done Their Internal Work
They recognize their triggers, and the power of the pause. Then they choose a different response. This is the shift from trigger → glimmer.
“Awareness is moving from triggers to glimmers.”
Remember, a glimmer comes in a moment after a pause when you say, “How else can I handle this situation so everyone wins?”
Consistency builds trust. And trust is the currency of leadership.
5. Loved Leaders Invite Growth Instead of Demanding Perfection
People don’t grow under pressure alone. They grow when they feel supported, challenged, and safe enough to stretch. Great leaders don’t expect perfection. They expect progress. Therefore, they coach instead of criticize, ask instead of assume, and develop instead of dictate.
This is where Head (strategy), Heart (connection), and Gut (intuition) come into full alignment.
And when that happens? Teams don’t just perform. They evolve.
6. Wise Leaders Walk Their Talk
This may be the most important one, because people are always watching. Not what leaders say, but what they do.
“Great leaders SAY WHAT THEY MEAN AND DO WHAT THEY SAY.”
This could be posted in offices everywhere as a reminder of what good-to-great looks like. Leaders who are loved own their mistakes, apologize when needed, and follow through on commitments.
Leaders who lose often fall into the denier pattern, pretending everything is fine. Or they, as bullies, revert to JUBLA where they judge, defend or attack. Who do you know who fits these patterns?
Please remember: Integrity is not a leadership trait. It’s a daily practice. And when leaders embody it, people feel it immediately. Integrity shows up before the first words are uttered. Even before, “Hello.”
The Bottom Line of Positive Leadership
People don’t stay because of perks, ping-pong tables, or flexible schedules. They stay because of how a leader makes them feel, and who that leader helps them become. The leaders people love to work with are not perfect. But they are aware, intentional, and willing to do the inner work.
Because leadership is not just about what you achieve. It’s about the patterns you transform along the way. My Total Leadership Connections program teaches you exactly how to do this and become a leader who is loved, respected, and admired.
A Final Glimmer
If you want to know what kind of leader you are, don’t look at your results. Look at your relationships. That’s where the truth lives.
To your success,
Sylvia Lafair
